DESCRIPTION:Coordinated by Luc Jacobs. Here is the info for photos: \n\n 1. Maximum 50 photos per participating member (depending on the number of people that want to show pictures\, I may need to make a selection and pair the numbers down a bit.  I think the absolute maximum number of photos should not exceed 300.  E.g. if 7 people send 50 photos each\, I will take out 7 photos per submission to bring it down to 301).\n2. The photos need to be in JPEG format\n3. Each file name should include the name of the bird.  If you want to also show on the slides the location where the photos were taken\, please include the name of the location also in the file name\, or include a Word document with the cross reference of location to the file name.  I will then make sure that the location is shown on the slides..\n4. The photos should preferably be sent to Luc Jacobs via websites such as DROPBOX or WETRANSFER.  These services are free if you don’t exceed 2 Gb for the 50 photos combined\n5. Luc’s email address is jacobsluc52@yahoo.com\n6. Please make sure to get your photos to Luc by May 15th at the very latest.  Earlier submissions are encouraged\n7. This walk will cover 1-2 miles on gently sloping natural surface trails and will last approximately 2-3 hours. Modern restrooms are available on site at the park office. This field trip is a collaboration between WCBC and Valley Forge Audubon Society. \nDirections: Turn left as you enter the park. He travels regularly to India and spends time enjoying South Indian birds during his travel. This event is free but donations are always welcome via Paypal or donations at the door. Note that the time has been shifted an hour earlier this month. \nNote: Join local birding expert Mike Coulter as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania. \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

Some rooms have two twin beds so people can share to save costs\, but most have only one queen\, so we will be limited in the number of participants.  Early registration with the leaders is important. If you are interested in doing this trip\, even if you are not sure\, please let the leaders know as soon as possible so we save the correct number and mix of rooms before they sell out. SUMMARY:Even More Recent Discoveries About Migratory Bird Ecology Using Radar and Telemetry
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Buler  \nDr. Buler will share highlights of recent and ongoing research by his lab and colleagues in the field of aeroecology: the study of the ecology of flying animals aloft. He will talk about how he uses radar and telemetry technologies to make new discoveries into 1) how the Mid-West corn belt is a man-made migration barrier for forest birds\, 2) the aquatic nature of Purple Martins in our region\, and 3) the reintroduction of Northern Bobwhites into Pennsylvania. \n  \nJeff Buler is a Professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. His broad research interests include avian ecology\, landscape ecology\, remote-sensing\, and conservation biology. Dr. Buler established the Aeroecology Program at the University of Delaware in 2011. He is an international leader in the development of novel methods and software for using weather surveillance radars to study the broad-scale distribution\, movement\, and habitat use patterns of birds\, insects\, and bats. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. Note that the time has been shifted an hour earlier this month. \nNote: Join local birding expert Mike Coulter as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania. \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

DESCRIPTION:For: Early spring migrants such as Louisiana Waterthrush \nPlace: 191 County Park Rd.\, 8:00 a.m. \nLeader: John Mercer (484-459-2062\, mercer1135@aol.com)\, Patty & John Werth (pattyww@comcast.net) \nNote: The Chester County Parks system has seven wonderful parks which provide excellent birdwatching opportunities.  Join us as we explore all seven of the parks\, one per month\, in 2024. \nThe 535-acre Warwick County Park in northern Chester County includes dense hardwood forest\, wetlands\, meadows\, and riparian areas along a section of French Creek\, an “exceptional value” stream. This diversity provides excellent habitat for birds. This 1.5 to 2 hour walk on mainly flat (and possibly muddy) terrain on unpaved trails will cover approximately 2 miles. A modern restroom is on site. This walk is a collaboration of WCBC and Valley Forge Audubon Society\n \nDirections: From the intersection of Routes 100 and 23\, proceed west on Route 23 for 3.4 miles. Turn left onto County Park Road (entrance is somewhat hidden) and continue 0.3 miles to the entrance to Warwick County Park\, on the left. Follow the drive to the last parking lot on the left.

DESCRIPTION:Jeff Kenney & Angela Romanczuk \nThe massive undertaking to catalogue Pennsylvania’s breeding and non-breeding birds known as Pennsylvania Bird Atlas 3 (PBA3) is already underway. PBA3 will only be possible through the efforts of thousands of volunteers carefully logging their data through early 2029. Years of future conservation and land management decisions will be based upon the data collected in the next five years. This session with Chester County Atlas Co-Coordinators Jeff Kenney and Angela Romanczuk will detail how you can contribute and will provide answers to any questions you may have. \n  \nJeff Kenney has lived in Chester County for most of his life. Having been introduced to birding as a child by his father Mike\, Jeff’s passion for birds and nature was mostly dormant until being rekindled in 2020. Now an avid (and moderately obsessive) state and county lister\, Jeff’s favorite place to bird in Chester County is the Crows Nest Preserve/State Game Lands 43 complex in Elverson. Jeff currently resides in Phoenixville with his two dogs\, Vita and Grits\, and is a founding board member of In Color Birding Club\, as well as a Force of Nature volunteer with Natural Lands. \n  \nAngela Romanczuk has lived in multiple Pennsylvania counties\, but has spent most of her adult life in Montgomery and Chester counties. While Angela has always loved being outdoors\, it wasn’t until 2020 that she was introduced to birding. She now enjoys exploring under-birded areas all over Pennsylvania and is forever on the lookout for the American Woodcock. Angela’s favorite local places to bird are Crow’s Nest Preserve in Chester County\, Congo Road Open Space in Montgomery County and her backyard. American Woodcock will be showing off their dazzling mating displays. Oh\, and a good possibility of singing Virginia Rails as well! American Woodcock are known for their elaborate courtship displays. Males will venture out into open areas after sunset and set up a display area. Birds will initially call out with their “peent” calls to announce their presence to other Woodcock. Males will then take flight circling up to 100 meters high with a combination of specialized wings creating a twittering sound as well as vocal chirping. Birds then descend in a rapid circling motion to land in the exact spot they started from. Displays can last as long as 30 minutes. \nPlease arrive promptly and bring a chair so you can relax and see the show! \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! SUMMARY:Bling For Birds: An Overview of Songbird Banding
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Sindlinger \nLongtime volunteer bander Victoria Sindlinger will share the process and importance of migratory songbird banding. We will learn about what questions bird banding can answer\, as well as walk through the entire process from capture to data-gathering to release.\n \nVictoria has enjoyed nature and in particular birds from a very young age.  She is a devoted volunteer at Rushton Woods Preserve\, where she has been participating in both songbird and saw-whet owl banding since 2015. In September of 2021\, Victoria had the honor of joining the eBird review team in September 2021 for Philadelphia County.  Of all her birding interests\, she is particularly fervent about conservation\, especially in regards to educating the public on how bird collisions with glass can be prevented. This passion led to the creation of “Hope in the Night\,” which is an art installment honoring birds and their power to inspire change.  Most recently\, to extend her outreach efforts for conservation\, Victoria has begun working toward a wildlife permit to own and handle raptors for educational purposes.  Outside of all things birds\, she also enjoys social dancing\, travel\, leather working\, and opera.\n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. SUMMARY:The Manayunk Peregrines
DESCRIPTION:Judy Stepanaskie \nThe story of the peregrine falcons nesting in the steeple of St. John the Baptist RC Church in the Manayunk Neighborhood of Philadelphia. \n  \nJudy has always loved nature and the outdoors and even spent a year as an intern at a nature center but didn’t start birding until she was in her 40’s.  She was there on the Green Lane Bridge over the Schuylkill River in Manayunk when the two peregrines were first spotted in February 2011\, and has been watching them ever since.  She was nicknamed the ‘Peregrine Godmother’ in an article by Mike Weilbacher\, formerly the Director of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.\n \nJudy bought a camera to photograph the peregrines and is now an avid photographer as well as an avid birder.  Her photos of the peregrines have been shown on WPHL 17 and in the Philadelphia Inquirer.  They have also been published in Mike Weilbacher’s 2023 book: Wild Philly – Explore the Amazing Nature in & around Philadelphia\, Timber Press\, and Bernard S. Brown’s 2022 book:  Exploring Philly Nature – A Guide for All Four Seasons\, Temple University Press.\n \nJudy received an undergraduate degree from West Chester State College and worked as a chemist.  She later went on to earn a master’s degree in environmental science from Drexel University.   She then went into the field of Occupational Health and Safety\, working as an Industrial Hygienist until she retired in 2015.\n \nSince retiring Judy has been active in bird conservation.  She is the co-chair of the PA Audubon Council’s Renewable Energy Committee and was honored by the Wyncote Audubon Society in Dec. 2022 with the Edward Hicks Parry award for her work with this committee.  She is a fellow of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club and has also been active with Bird Safe Philly.\n \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

He specializes in self-guided expeditions on a reasonable budget\, and will share with us some of his most memorable birding experiences as well as his strategies for planning his expeditions. SUMMARY:Frosty Forests and Frozen Fields:  Winter Birrrding in Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Wayne Laubsher\n  \nGoing north in the winter for birdwatching?  Yes!  It’s quality more so than quantity as this program highlights the various far northern specialty bird species that appear in Ontario and even the northeastern U.S. during certain winters.  Irruptive species of raptors and finches\, wintering northern species of waterfowl and gulls\, and the occasional western vagrants will be covered.  Where and when to find them and reasons why they show up so far south of their normal range will also be discussed.  The emphasis of the program will be on the areas of southern and eastern Ontario and also a few nearby areas in Quebec. \n  \nWayne is the Clinton County compiler for the PA Birds publication and a member of the Lycoming Audubon Society board as well as the Northcentral PA Conservancy Technical Committee.  He also coordinates the Audubon CBC centered in the Lock Haven area.  He is a native of the Lock Haven area in Clinton County\, residing in Swissdale.  Some of Wayne’s recent work was as a bio aide for the PA Game Commission.  Since 2019 he has been the Mosquito Disease Control Coordinator for Centre\, Clinton\, and Clearfield  Counties conducting WNV surveillance.  Wayne also bands owls and hummingbirds in his spare time. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. SUMMARY:River of Raptors - Veracruz\, Mexico with Pronatura
DESCRIPTION:For: Raptors especially the migration of Swainson’s Hawks plus local and migrating birds of Central Mexico. \nLeaders: John Mercer (484-459-2062\, mercer1135@aol.com) \nNote1:  The primary target of this trip is to view the amazing raptor migration in Veracruz\, Mexico. This is the count site for the “River of Raptors”\, the largest raptor migration in the world. Swainson’s Hawks make up the majority of the migrants but many other hawk species will be moving with them. Besides going to the hawk watches\, local guides from Pronatura (the nonprofit that runs the raptor counts in Veracruz) will take us to several other locations to find birds. Some of these are Juan Angel beach\, Villa Rica Lagoon\, the Quiahuixtlan ruins\, Highlands of Perote\, and Las Barrancas\, a grassland and wetlands. A visit to the Museum of Anthropology of Xalapa and boat trip on la Antigua river are included. Some of the birds that may be found include Aplomado Falcon\, Blue Mockingbird\, Bearded Wood-partridge\, Blue-capped Motmot\, Green Jay\, Elegant Euphonia\, Red Warbler\, Golden-browed Warbler\, Crescent-chested Warbler\, Lucifer Hummingbird\, Mexican Violetear\, Mountain Trogon\, Olivaceus Woodcreeper\, Black-headed Nightingale Thrush\, Yellow Headed Parrot\, Lineated Woodpecker and Canivet’s Emerald. \nNote2: This trip will be limited to 12 participants and has a minimum of 6 participants. Costs will be dependent on the number of participants. Early registration with the leader is important. If you are interested in doing this trip\, even if you are not sure\, please let the leader know as soon as possible so we save the correct number and mix of rooms before they sell out. There is time to cancel the reservations if you change your mind\, but may not be a chance to add any if you decide to go last minute. \nNote3: Price range estimate. SUMMARY:Leave the Leaves and Dive Into Shade Gardening Instead
DESCRIPTION:Pat Sutton \nEvery-day gardeners who transition into wildlife gardening often have a hard time rethinking the many tasks they’ve tackled for years\, tasks that are highly hazardous to the very wildlife they are working so hard to attract and benefit. Pat Sutton will open your eyes to a world of life hidden in fallen leaves\, which to her are anything but leaf “litter.” She will uncover the secret lives of butterflies and moths\, bumble bees and other beneficial pollinators\, salamanders\, fireflies and so much more through the winter months\, all tucked safely in and under leaf litter. As late winter and early spring arrive\, she will showcase the many native wildflowers that so easily bust through the deepest leaf litter and light up shade gardens throughout her yard. \n  \nPat Sutton lives near Cape May\, New Jersey\, the world renowned migratory crossroads that is famous for its hawk\, owl\, songbird\, shorebird\, dragonfly\, and Monarch butterfly migration. She has keenly studied the natural world for over 30 years. \n  \nPat and her husband Clay’s landmark book\, Birds and Birding at Cape May (Stackpole Books\, 2006)\, is the in-depth result of their efforts over many years documenting and protecting the migration and the hometown that they so love. Pat and Clay Sutton together have co-authored How to Spot Butterflies (1999)\, How to Spot Hawks & Eagles (1996)\, and How to Spot an Owl (1994)\, all published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. \n  \nPat has been a working naturalist since 1977\, first for the Cape May Point State Park and then for 21 years with New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory\, where she was the Naturalist and Program Director (1986 to 2007). Pat has a Masters Degree from Rowan University in Environmental Education and an undergraduate degree in Literature from the State University of New York at Oneonta. Today\, Pat is a free-lance writer\, photographer\, naturalist\, educator\, lecturer\, tour leader\, and wildlife habitat / conservation gardening educator. Pat is a passionate wildlife habitat gardener and advocate for butterflies\, moths\, bees (all pollinators)\, birds\, dragonflies\, frogs\, toads\, and other critters. Pat has taught about wildlife-friendly and native plant gardening for over 30 years. Sutton’s own wildlife garden is a “teaching garden” featured in many programs\, workshops\, and garden tours. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. For example\, this is the time of the year that common nighthawks can often be seen swooping through the skies at dusk\, and young eastern screech owls are learning to sing. Our partnership with Chester County Parks and Preservation allows us to be in the park beyond closing time for this field trip\, much of which will take place on the paved loop trail which is fully accessible to those with mobility challenges. \nThis outing will cover about a mile on paved and natural surface trails and will last approximately 2 hours. SUMMARY:Bicknell’s Thrush\, Vermont Boreal Specialties & Maine Coast
DESCRIPTION:For: Bicknell’s Thrush\, Boreal Chickadee\, Canada Jay\, Spruce Grouse\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, coastal alcids\, and (hopefully) pelagics. \nPlace: TBD \nLeaders: Michael Blust (802-345-8612\, mhblust@gmail.com) \nNote1:  The primary target for this trip is the Bicknell’s Thrush. We will join banders from The Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE) atop Mt. Mansfield on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning to hopefully see this thrush in the wild and in the hand. Following this we head to the northeast area of Vermont\, known as the Northeast Kingdom\, to try for any boreal specialties that may still be evident despite it being mid-breeding season when they tend to be quieter. Moose Bog will be our place of focus. Finally we head to the coast of Maine for breeding birds such as Common Eider and Black Guillemot . If the schedule works out we will do a whale-watch/pelagic trip with the possibility of seeing Atlantic Puffins\, shearwaters\, and other near-coastal pelagics. \nNote2: This trip will be limited to 10 participants. Early registration with the leader is important. If you are interested in doing this trip\, even if you are not sure\, please let the leader know as soon as possible so we save the correct number and mix of rooms before they sell out. This event is free but donations are always welcome via Paypal or donations at the door. Note that the time has been shifted an hour earlier this month.\n \nNote: Join local birding expert Mike Coulter as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania.\n \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear.\n \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips.\n \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. DESCRIPTION:Club Member Brian Quindlen \nThe Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn\, Pennsylvania is unlike most other YMCAs. It is situated on a 54-acre campus in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Twenty of these acres contain the Cassatt Preserve\, which is part of the first conservation easement in the state of Pennsylvania. This property contains a unique history for both the habitats and the people who have enjoyed it over the last century. Serving first as a summer estate\, then a Norbertine monastery\, and finally a YMCA\, this property would eventually be home to a robust youth birding program and environmental education center. This program is a tribute to history of the habitats\, people\, and birds that make this property special. \n  \nBrian “BQ” Quindlen is an avid birder\, photographer\, digiscoper\, and educator from Malvern\, Pennsylvania. As a Pennsylvania state certified K-6 elementary school teacher and K-12 environmental educator\, BQ connects students with nature in a formal education setting. Also\, BQ is the leader of the Garnet Valley Trailblazers nature program\, an environmental education club and summer camp that takes students from first through twelfth grade birding.\n \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Katie Fallon\n  \nVultures are often overlooked\, underappreciated\, and unloved\, despite the vital roles they play in healthy ecosystems. Worldwide\, vultures are primarily scavengers; they can help stop the spread of disease by quickly and efficiently removing dead animals from the landscape. Unfortunately\, due to poisoning\, direct persecution\, habitat loss\, and other threats\, vultures are more likely to be threatened or endangered than any other group of raptors. But in the Western Hemisphere\, Turkey and Black Vultures counter this trend and are increasing in number. Based on Katie Fallon’s recent book\, this fun presentation will explore the life and times of the noble Turkey Vulture\, including its feeding\, nesting\, and roosting habits\, migratory behaviors\, and common misconceptions.
