SUMMARY:The Great Marsh
DESCRIPTION:For: Waterfowl\, Sparrows and Rusty Blackbirds \nPlace: 28 Moores Road\, Elverson\, PA\, 8:00 a.m. \nLeader: Mike Coulter. If you plan to attend please email the Great Marsh Institute at lori@greatmarshinstitute.org to let them know to expect you. \nNote: Join local birding expert Mike Coulter as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania. October at GMI is all about Waterfowl\, Sparrows and Blackbirds; Rusty Blackbirds that is. The Great Marsh hosts wintering populations of this rapidly declining species and October is when they typically move in. Flocks of several dozen are not uncommon here this time of year. Waterfowl are also on the move. In the past we have had: Cackling Goose\, Blue and Green-winged Teal\, Northern Shoveler\, Northern Pintail\, Bufflehead\, American Black Duck\, and Pied-billed Grebe. Sparrows will be moving in as well including chances of seeing: Fox\, White-crowned\, Vesper\, Savannah\, and Lincoln’s. Other species of note seen in October include: Golden Eagle\, Northern Harrier\, Blue-headed Vireo\, Common Raven\, Red-breasted Nuthatch\, Winter and Marsh Wren\, Purple Finch\, Pine Siskin\, and Eastern Meadowlark. In all\, 101 species have been recording in October. \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

SUMMARY:The Great Marsh
DESCRIPTION:For: Summer Resident Birds \nPlace: 28 Moores Road\, Elverson\, PA\, 8:00 a.m. August may be the quietest time of year as breeding birds are no longer competing for or defending territories\, but it certainly does not mean that there is not some good birding action to be had. GMI has recorded 76 species in August in the past and we are hoping to add to that number as coverage has been light during this month in past years. Herons and Egrets are on the move in their post breeding dispersal. We will be keeping our eyes open for Great Egret and Little Blue Herons which have made appearances in the past. Southbound shorebird migration is under way and depending upon water levels we are likely to encounter a variety.

SUMMARY:Birding in Northern Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Sue Killeen – Former club president \n     Northern Ecuador features some of the country’s best-known birding locales. It is possible to see over 400 species in 10 days.  The west slope of the Andes and the lowlands of the northwest encompass part of the Choco Endemic region where many endemics and near endemics are found. You can find over 20 species of hummingbirds in the Mindo and Tandayapa Valleys.  Not to mention the Antpittas. \n     In the high Andes paramo region there are several high-altitude species that seem a bit dull because the environment is so barren due to the elevation but no less spectacular.  Then there is the east slope of Andes which has a whole new array of species not found in the west\, and an altitudinal transect can produce over 200 species in less than a week. \n     From there we will travel to the Amazon lowlands where we can find Macaws and parrots at clay licks as we travel along the Rio Napo and explore flooded plains.  The Napo Wildlife Center is within the Yasuni National Park.  It is claimed to be the most biodiverse place on Earth\, spanning nearly 2.5 million acres of lush rainforest. The Ecuadorian Amazon is home to more than 600 bird species. The splendors of the Amazon are unforgettable. \n     Come and join Sue on a wonderful adventure through Northern Ecuador \nHoatzin \n  \nNote: This is a virtual meeting. Zoom signon will start at 7:15 to enable the meeting to begin at 7:30.
