If you plan to attend please email the Great Marsh Institute at lori@greatmarshinstitute.org to let them know to expect you. This will help them to organize and keep groups small. This event is free but donations are always welcome via Paypal\, Venmo\, or cash donations at the door. \nNote: Join local birding expert Mike Coulter as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania. \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

DESCRIPTION:Robert S. Mulvihill\n \nThe National Aviary in Pittsburgh Does Bird Conservation Around the World. Formally designated as the “National” Aviary by an act of Congress signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993\, the National Aviary was first established as a local Conservatory-Aviary in 1952. For more than 70 years the facility has pursued its mission to “Inspire respect for nature through an appreciation of birds.” In addition to serving as a popular recreation and education destination\, the National Aviary pursues important bird conservation work around the world. Ornithologist\, Bob Mulvihill\, will give us a look behind the scenes at some of the National Aviary’s ground-breaking contributions to bird conservation efforts\, from Louisiana to the Dominican Republic\, Ecuador\, South Africa\, Guam\, and right back here in Pennsylvania\, too. \n  \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. They can recognize human faces\, pass knowledge along to new generations\, work together to protect each other\, set up sentries to watch for danger\, even use tools. Indeed\, all members of the crow family (called corvids) are intelligent\, including ravens\, jays\, and magpies. If you’d like to learn more about these geniuses of the avian world\, join master birder and author Constance Sidles as she takes you into the secret world of crows. \n  \nConstance Sidles is a master birder and long-time member of Birds Connect Seattle (formerly Seattle Audubon Society)\, where she served on the board and is chair of the Publications Committee. She currently serves on the Conservation Committee. Connie is on the faculty of the University of Washington as an instructor in continuing education programs. She also teaches classes for various Audubon societies across the country. Connie is an author with more than 600 published articles and is founder and president of Constancy Press. She has written four books about nature focusing on her favorite “backyard” Montlake Fill\, (formally called Union Bay Natural Area) on the University of Washington campus. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held Zoom only. DESCRIPTION:Jason Weckstein\n \nJason Weckstein\, Associate Curator of Ornithology at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University and Associate Professor in the Department of Biodiversity\, Earth\, and Environmental Science\, Drexel University will talk about iconic specimens from the Academy of Natural Sciences Ornithology Collection.  The Academy of Natural Sciences Ornithology collection is approximately the 6th largest bird collection in the world and is the 2nd largest University based bird collection in the world.  The collection is worldwide in scope and houses a large proportion of the described bird species in the world.  Jason will touch on some of his favorite specimens in the collection including endangered\, extinct\, and little known species from around the world. \n  \nJason Weckstein obtained his BS in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan (1993)\, his MS in Zoology from the University of Minnesota (1997)\, and his Ph.D. in Zoology from Louisiana State University (2003).  For his dissertation\, he reconstructed the coevolutionary history and host-parasite associations between toucans and their ectoparasites using DNA sequences.  After the Ph.D. he continued studying birds and parasites as a postdoctoral fellow at the Illinois Natural History Survey\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago\, where he stayed on as a staff scientist until joining the Biodiversity\, Earth\, and Environmental Sciences faculty and Academy of Natural Sciences in 2014 as an Associate Professor/Associate Curator.   \nWeckstein is a fellow of the American Ornithological Society and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and delivered over 50 presentations at universities and both national and international scientific meetings.  He has over 20 years of experience working in natural history museums and has conducted research on birds and their parasites in the United States\, Canada\, South Africa\, Ghana\, Malawi\, Nicaragua\, Brazil\, and Mexico.  In addition to teaching\, training\, and research\, Jason’s additional interests at the Academy of Natural Sciences include collections building\, curation\, and public outreach. \nWeckstein’s research focuses on three main areas: 1) avian comparative biology and evolutionary history\, 2) biodiversity of birds and their parasites\, and 3) coevolutionary history of birds and their parasites.  He utilizes field collected bird and associated parasite specimens and analyzes their DNA sequence data to reconstruct their ecology and evolutionary history. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Hank Davis\n \nI became passionate about Hummingbirds on a trip to Cuba with the Delaware Nature Society in 2013. Since then\, I have traveled to Ecuador 3 times\, Costa Rica 2 times\, Brazil 4 times\, Mexico once\, Trinidad & Tobago once\, and Peru once. I still have many more countries to go to. I would love to see all 360+ species but realize that will not happen. There are places where one just does not go to see Hummingbirds. So far\, my life list is 160 species\, of which I have photographed 149. This presentation is primarily a photographic journey of my quest to see Hummingbirds. \n  \nHank Davis is originally from New York City but has lived in the Delaware Valley for 50+ years. Upon his move to the area\, he gained an appreciation for nature and open space. Ultimately\, this led to a career in horticulture that lasted many years. Since his retirement\, he decided to pursue his lifelong passion in photography. Jump on board with WCBC member Sheila Martin as we pictorially explore untamed Patagonia – where some of the world’s most stunning landscapes are filled with wildlife to the max! Moment by moment the experience of hiking the walkways around Iguazu Falls is simply nature at its finest. And\, for Sheila\, when Plush-crested Jay & Chestnut-eared Aracari appeared on the parking lot\, she knew it would be days of incomparable sighting thrills\, including up to two dozen dizzying endemics to follow\, just in that pre-tour locale! Atlantic coastal Argentina in November offers exceptional close-up wildlife observation\, straight down to the straits of Tierra del Fuego – with Red Knots ready to migrate\, and Austral Negrito & “Loica” ever-present. Farther inland\, we find the best puma-viewing on the planet! It was southern-hemisphere springtime ’22 – and all the breeding birds were showing off their best. While in Chile\, the quaint atmosphere\, friendly locals and Patagonia Sierra-finch\, Tufted Tit-tyrant plus Magellanic Woodpecker further enriched her experience. SUMMARY:Smithsonian’s Feather Identification Lab
DESCRIPTION:Faridah Dahlan & Ingred Rochon \nDid you know that molecular and microscopic identification of feathers plays a key role in aviation safety? The Smithsonian’s Feather Identification Lab processes over 11\,000 wildlife strike cases each year to determine which species of birds are involved in collisions with aircraft – the first step to implementing preventative measures to keep both birds and people safe. Learn how the lab identifies both whole feathers and fragmentary bird remains (aka “snarge”) using the Smithsonian’s collection of 600\,000 bird specimens\, as well as the resources of the museum’s Laboratories of Analytical Biology. \n  \nPresenter Faridah Dahlan is a molecular specialist who has worked for the Feather Lab since 2008. Ingrid Rochon began working at the Smithsonian in 2016 as a museum technician\, joining the Feather Lab in 2023 as an apprentice microscopist under Dr. Carla Dove. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. It is usually a fun time to see how many birds can be spotted while not moving out of a 15 foot circle. Great fun\, with plenty of food and camaraderie\, like tailgating. \nDirections: From Coatesville\, PA (in western Chester County): From the Rt. 30 By-pass north of Coatesville\, take Rt. 82 exit north. Turn left at the 4-way stop sign (Rt.340) and go 1.3 miles to Wagontown Rd. Turn right on Wagontown Rd. and continue on this winding hill for 1.5 miles (you will pass the Hibernia Park entrance on your right). Continue up the hill and the lake will become visible on the right. If attending the “Big Sit”\, continue a couple of tenths of a mile further along Wagontown Rd. past the lake parking lot and to the western dike of the lake. Carefully pull off the road and park in the grass near the dike. You will see us sitting on the dike near the road. \nChambers Lake

This will help them to organize and keep groups small. This event is free but donations are always welcome via Paypal\, Venmo\, or cash donations at the door. \nNote: Join local birding expert Mike Coulter as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania. \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

On the eastern side of Elkton\, on the north side of Route 40\, 7:30 a.m. \nLeader: Armas Hill (302-529-1876\, Armas@focusonnature.com) \nNote: A walk to the marsh and other habitats at Elk Landing\, the Elk River Park and then to the Elk Neck State Forest including the arboretum. Lastly to the Elk Neck State Park\, at the head of Chesapeake Bay\, one of the best places in the Mid-Atlantic for bird migration in the late summer and fall. Mostly songbirds and raptors. The walk should be completed around noon. Afternoon birding may be available if people wish to continue. If so\, bring lunch. There is a bathroom in the state park. \nDirections: Route 95 south to Delaware 896 south. Note that the day has been shifted from Sunday to Saturday this month. \nNote: Join local birder Barry Blust as he guides us through the Great Marsh\, an ancient periglacial marsh and the largest marsh in Southeastern Pennsylvania. \nThis event is hosted by the Great Marsh Institute\, a non-profit with the mission of supporting scientific studies and educational opportunities for all! This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

As is our custom\, the picnic will be pot luck. Everyone should bring some food to share and drinks for yourself. Please bring non-disposable plates and cutlery to avoid waste. There will be tables and chairs available in the building. \nAlso there is a small wooded park\, Jane I Reed Park\, located a short walk from the schoolhouse if anyone would like to do a short birding walk. The park has a path about a .3 mile loop in the woods and it is about a .4 mile walk to the park\, so allow 1 – 1.5 hours if you want to do a bird walk. If anyone is interested\, let us know and we can try to set up something more formal for people to join together for the walk. \nParking: In the East Bradford township building lot\, across from the schoolhouse. There is also a large lot on the north side of Copeland School Rd\, before the stop sign. If you have to park there\, use caution crossing Copeland School Rd. Please try the township building lot first\, it should hold everyone.

Maximum 50 photos per participating member (depending on the number of people that want to show pictures\, I may need to make a selection and pair the numbers down a bit.  I think the absolute maximum number of photos should not exceed 300.  E.g. if 7 people send 50 photos each\, I will take out 7 photos per submission to bring it down to 301).\n2. The photos need to be in JPEG format\n3. Each file name should include the name of the bird.  If you want to also show on the slides the location where the photos were taken\, please include the name of the location also in the file name\, or include a Word document with the cross reference of location to the file name.  I will then make sure that the location is shown on the slides..\n4. The photos should preferably be sent to Luc Jacobs via websites such as DROPBOX or WETRANSFER.  These services are free if you don’t exceed 2 Gb for the 50 photos combined\n5. Luc’s email address is jacobsluc52@yahoo.com\n6. Please make sure to get your photos to Luc by May 15th at the very latest.  Earlier submissions are encouraged\n7. DESCRIPTION:Jeff Buler  \nDr. Buler will share highlights of recent and ongoing research by his lab and colleagues in the field of aeroecology: the study of the ecology of flying animals aloft. He will talk about how he uses radar and telemetry technologies to make new discoveries into 1) how the Mid-West corn belt is a man-made migration barrier for forest birds\, 2) the aquatic nature of Purple Martins in our region\, and 3) the reintroduction of Northern Bobwhites into Pennsylvania. \n  \nJeff Buler is a Professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. His broad research interests include avian ecology\, landscape ecology\, remote-sensing\, and conservation biology. Dr. Buler established the Aeroecology Program at the University of Delaware in 2011. He is an international leader in the development of novel methods and software for using weather surveillance radars to study the broad-scale distribution\, movement\, and habitat use patterns of birds\, insects\, and bats. \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. This diversity provides excellent habitat for birds. This 1.5 to 2 hour walk on mainly flat (and possibly muddy) terrain on unpaved trails will cover approximately 2 miles. DESCRIPTION:Jeff Kenney & Angela Romanczuk \nThe massive undertaking to catalogue Pennsylvania’s breeding and non-breeding birds known as Pennsylvania Bird Atlas 3 (PBA3) is already underway. PBA3 will only be possible through the efforts of thousands of volunteers carefully logging their data through early 2029. Years of future conservation and land management decisions will be based upon the data collected in the next five years. This session with Chester County Atlas Co-Coordinators Jeff Kenney and Angela Romanczuk will detail how you can contribute and will provide answers to any questions you may have. \n  \nJeff Kenney has lived in Chester County for most of his life. Having been introduced to birding as a child by his father Mike\, Jeff’s passion for birds and nature was mostly dormant until being rekindled in 2020. Now an avid (and moderately obsessive) state and county lister\, Jeff’s favorite place to bird in Chester County is the Crows Nest Preserve/State Game Lands 43 complex in Elverson. Jeff currently resides in Phoenixville with his two dogs\, Vita and Grits\, and is a founding board member of In Color Birding Club\, as well as a Force of Nature volunteer with Natural Lands. \n  \nAngela Romanczuk has lived in multiple Pennsylvania counties\, but has spent most of her adult life in Montgomery and Chester counties. While Angela has always loved being outdoors\, it wasn’t until 2020 that she was introduced to birding. She now enjoys exploring under-birded areas all over Pennsylvania and is forever on the lookout for the American Woodcock. Angela’s favorite local places to bird are Crow’s Nest Preserve in Chester County\, Congo Road Open Space in Montgomery County and her backyard. SUMMARY:Bling For Birds: An Overview of Songbird Banding
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Sindlinger \nLongtime volunteer bander Victoria Sindlinger will share the process and importance of migratory songbird banding. We will learn about what questions bird banding can answer\, as well as walk through the entire process from capture to data-gathering to release.\n \nVictoria has enjoyed nature and in particular birds from a very young age.  She is a devoted volunteer at Rushton Woods Preserve\, where she has been participating in both songbird and saw-whet owl banding since 2015. In September of 2021\, Victoria had the honor of joining the eBird review team in September 2021 for Philadelphia County.  Of all her birding interests\, she is particularly fervent about conservation\, especially in regards to educating the public on how bird collisions with glass can be prevented. This passion led to the creation of “Hope in the Night\,” which is an art installment honoring birds and their power to inspire change.  Most recently\, to extend her outreach efforts for conservation\, Victoria has begun working toward a wildlife permit to own and handle raptors for educational purposes.  Outside of all things birds\, she also enjoys social dancing\, travel\, leather working\, and opera.\n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom. Zoom signon will start at 7:15 to enable the meeting to begin at 7:30.

This event is free\, but donations of any amount are welcome to support the Institute! For full trip details see here. This will be about a 3 hour walk. Conditions could be muddy and very wet so wear appropriate footwear. \nPlease note that the property is private but you can always visit during our planned trips. \nDirections: The marsh is off of Rt. 401 four miles northwest of Rt. 100 at Ludwig’s Corner. Lat/Long = 40.127651\, -75.767697 or use 28 Moores Road for GPS directions. Meet at the grassy parking area at the top of the hill near 28 Moores Road. Once you turn off of Rt. 401 on to Moore’s Road proceed 1/4 mile along the gravel road. You will cross a bridge and at the 1/4 mile mark make a right up the hill on the paved part of the drive. This is the first right after the bridge. At the top of the hill you should see other cars parked in the meeting area.

SUMMARY:The Manayunk Peregrines
DESCRIPTION:Judy Stepanaskie \nThe story of the peregrine falcons nesting in the steeple of St. John the Baptist RC Church in the Manayunk Neighborhood of Philadelphia. \n  \nJudy has always loved nature and the outdoors and even spent a year as an intern at a nature center but didn’t start birding until she was in her 40’s.  She was there on the Green Lane Bridge over the Schuylkill River in Manayunk when the two peregrines were first spotted in February 2011\, and has been watching them ever since.  She was nicknamed the ‘Peregrine Godmother’ in an article by Mike Weilbacher\, formerly the Director of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.\n \nJudy bought a camera to photograph the peregrines and is now an avid photographer as well as an avid birder.  Her photos of the peregrines have been shown on WPHL 17 and in the Philadelphia Inquirer.  They have also been published in Mike Weilbacher’s 2023 book: Wild Philly – Explore the Amazing Nature in & around Philadelphia\, Timber Press\, and Bernard S. Brown’s 2022 book:  Exploring Philly Nature – A Guide for All Four Seasons\, Temple University Press.\n \nJudy received an undergraduate degree from West Chester State College and worked as a chemist.  She later went on to earn a master’s degree in environmental science from Drexel University.   She then went into the field of Occupational Health and Safety\, working as an Industrial Hygienist until she retired in 2015.\n \nSince retiring Judy has been active in bird conservation.  She is the co-chair of the PA Audubon Council’s Renewable Energy Committee and was honored by the Wyncote Audubon Society in Dec. 2022 with the Edward Hicks Parry award for her work with this committee.  She is a fellow of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club and has also been active with Bird Safe Philly.\n \n  \nNote: This meeting will be held in person at the meeting house and via Zoom.
